Ben has worked as a butcher in Walton on Thames for over 15 years, starting as a Saturday boy at his local butcher shop when he was just 13 years old, where he mastered his extensive butchery skills and gathered a wealth of experience within the industry. Full of determination to own his own butcher shop by the time he reached 30, he did not think twice when his dream butchers shop in Hinchley Wood became available, offering a location in the hub of a fantastic local community.

The Butcher in the Wood opened in August 2017 and offers modern expertise along with traditional values. Our aim is to make meat more appealing and modern, whilst giving everybody a taste of meat as it ought to be, along with enthusiastic, approachable, knowledgeable staff.

As a high-quality butcher, we pride ourselves on sourcing and supplying only the finest free range, farm reared meat and game from a selection of Great Britain farmers and producers. Our top quality beef and lamb comes directly from farms in Scotland and is supplied to us by John Scott Meat, where it is naturally fed and reared. We also source the finest quality farm assured English lambs through TW Ludgate, who locally source all of their produce. Our free-range pork is supplied by Packington Farm, where the pigs are truly ‘free-range’. Born and living outdoors for their whole lives with plenty of space to roam, they’re read to the highest welfare standards and are recognised within the industry and RSPCA Freedom Foods as the best that you can get.  In addition to our more traditional offerings, barbeque meats are our speciality and unlike many butchers these days, we work with the whole carcass, meaning our expert butchers can offer any cut you desire in a variety of different marinades, along with an extensive range of handmade sausages, burgers and kebabs.

Aside from just meat, we also stock a wide variety of delicious artisan produce including fine cheeses, charcuterie, homemade black pudding, cooked hams and other cooked meats, which are all prepared onsite. We also stock various ready to cook meals, pies, cook in sauces, pickles, honey and other local produce and condiments. We want to ensure we have all the essentials so that you can put together some great home cooking with ease.

The Butcher in the Wood can also provide Hog Roasts and BBQs for any occasion and has the staff and knowledge to make sure you receive only the finest of foods. A hog roast or barbecue is a cost effective, social and informal way to feed a crowd. When you bring in a master butcher to lay it on for you, you can be sure that not only will everything be taken care of, but it will taste incredible!

Our Story

The Butcher in the Wood is committed to providing the highest quality fresh and cooked meat products, with the added confidence of traceability and good health and hygiene practices. We believe that this is what keeps our local customers coming back to us time after time.

Our meat is sourced from both English and Scottish farms, where welfare is the utmost priority. We consider it imperative that our chosen farms traditionally breed, rear and care for their animals to meet our highest standards and can demonstrate their commitment to quality, consistency, and animal welfare, so you can rest assure that you are receiving first-class products every time.

Beef from The Butcher in the Wood is a truly premium product. To achieve this we take great care to select the best suppliers and producers. We look for beef that has come from slow growing animals that have enjoyed a natural lifestyle and wholesome diet. Our main supplier is John Scott Meat of Paisley, who is closely aligned with Quality Meat Scotland and produce and source cattle with the final taste being of the prime importance. Once received, it is matured onsite, on the bone, for between 21 and 28 days (or longer) for extra flavour, which produces succulent, full flavoured joints and steaks for our customers. Our lambs, also supplied from John Scott Meat, are born and reared in the Highlands and are grass fed and naturally reared, to provide meat which is tender and full of flavour. It is also hung on the bone on site, for a minimum of 5 days, before being butchered into required cuts. Scotch Lamb is a firm favourite of ours and we have loads of great recipes and suggestions to share!

Our quality English produce is sourced from both Packington Farm in Gloucestershire and TW Ludgate in Oxfordshire. We believe animals reared for food deserve a happy, healthy life and Packington Farm’s pork and poultry are truly ‘free-range’. Born and living outdoors for their whole lives with plenty of space to roam, they’re reared to the highest welfare standards and are recognised within the industry and RSPCA Freedom Foods as the best that you can get. As well as quality beef and lamb, TW Ludgate provide us with our barn reared chickens, which ensures they have constant access to the outdoors throughout their lifetime.

Our Produce

The Butcher in the Wood knows that the best food can only start with the finest ingredients. As well as the extensive range of produce in the shop, we also provide an outside catering service, offering the best locally sourced free-range meat from our trusted suppliers, before it is cooked to perfection for any event big or small. We never pre-cook our pigs, the entire cooking process takes place on site with the utmost care and skill you would expect from a traditional butcher. Ben is a master butcher and has a wealth of knowledge and experience in delivering hog roast catering at the highest of standards. Professional service is guaranteed from the moment you get in touch.

Our menus offer traditional, innovative and mouth-watering options, tailored to meet the needs of each individual event. Whether your party is a private function or a large corporate event, we can offer you an affordable range of bespoke packages and adjust the menu to suit your budget, venue and guests. As a guide, a whole hog can be expected to feed 100-200 guests, whilst a lamb on the spit can feed around 30-40 guests. Additional meat options can be added to cater for any number of guests as well as apple sauce, sage and onion stuffing, fresh floured baps from the local bakery, and an assortment of delicious and colourful salads.

Fancy trying your own hog roasting skills or simply trying to keep costs down? We also offer a hog roast hire service where we will prepare the pig and deliver along with the roasting machine with a bottle of gas and help you set up and start the roasting process. We will then collect when you’re finished and don’t worry…we do the cleaning too!
